What Does It Take For You To Live Your Dream

You know the dream you've been wanting to make real, and you've known it for a while. Every time you get close to actually moving on it, you do the thing where you weigh it, and re-weigh it, and ask one more person, and decide you'll start once a few more things line up.

You call that being careful. I want to gently call out something else:

It's the indecision that's keeping you small.

It's not the dream being too big or the timing being wrong. It's the hemming and hawing itself that's the problem. And the longer you stay in it, the more reasonable it feels, until you've built an entire life out of almost-starting.

Here's what I've noticed, in myself and in the women I work with: the second-guessing doesn't stop because you finally think your way to certainty. It stops because you take action. You take a step, your body catches a rhythm, and suddenly there's less room for the mind to spin its very persuasive case for waiting. Motion is what quiets it, not more thinking.

I know your body hasn't always felt like a reliable place to take direction from. For a lot of women it doesn't — it's been the place anxiety lives, where chronic illness and pain reside, and where dread shows up before a something hard. Trusting it feels backwards, but the body is the one that's trying to help you grow. The mind is just trying to keep you exactly where you are, because where you are is known, and known feels safe even when it's killing you a little. Or a lot.

So you'll move and the fears will come. Let them. They're not signs you've made a mistake. They're the mind doing its job, throwing out every reason it can find for you to go backwards because the mind is designed to keep you safe. You don't have to argue with the fears, and you definitely don't have to obey them. You acknowledge them, stay curious about the ones that seem to be pointing at something worth looking at, and you keep walking.

And as for the dream itself, I want to say something about why it matters, because you've probably been treating it like a private indulgence. Something you'll get to once the responsible parts of your life are handled.

Your dream is not indulgent. It's not just yours, either. When you actually move toward your dream, when you let yourself be loud about it instead of keeping it folded up small, it does something for the people around you. It gives them permission. It shows them what it looks like to want something out loud. The dream feels deeply personal — and it is — but it has a reach you can't see from where you're standing.

Dreams aren't meant to stay dreams. They're meant to be lived in. That's the whole reason you have them in the first place.

So let yourself want it unreasonably. I mean that. Let yourself be a little delusional in the pursuit, because "unreasonable" is almost always just a measure of how few people around you can picture it yet. That's not information about whether it's possible. That's information about their imagination, not yours.

You're going to get pushback. Someone is going to suggest, kindly or not, that maybe you should be realistic. You don't have to take it on. You don't have to make your dream small enough that it stops making other people uncomfortable.

What does it take to live your dream? Less than you think, and also the one thing you keep skipping: you have to actually move toward it. Look for the next step, then the one after that, and let the path show itself as you go instead of demanding to see the whole thing before you'll take a single step.

What you want is meant for you. Be confident enough — or stubborn enough — to keep moving toward it while the doubt is still talking.
